RTA: Respect the Alley That’s the motto of the Kings Bowling Team, now about two months into its season and looking forward to a big tournament in the spring. Coached by Trent Olds, nephew of Kings varsity football coach Andy Olds, the team showed it’s meddle in a recent FAVC tournament at Northwest Lanes in Fairfield. On Jan. 7, the boys’ team placed fourth overall, losing to champions Glen Este in the third round. The boys’ team was very surprised by their performance, beating Loveland and only expecting to finish around twelfth place. “It was really cool to upset Loveland. None of us were expecting that, ” said senior bowler, Kyle Holdeman. “Losing to Glen Este wasn’t great, but it was still super cool getting that far.” Senior Nathan Meyer, pictured above in his Kings Bowling sweatshirt, shared how he deals with and prepares for the hectic atmosphere at the team’s big matches and tournaments. “I get kind of nervous. But we have two-a-days all season to prepare for our matches,” he said. “Coach Olds makes us run ball laps with the bowling balls above our heads,” Meyer says. “To mentally prepare, the day before a match I sit in solitude and watch PBA highlights.” Kings has a boys and girls bowling team. In February, both teams will compete in the state sectional tournament. “Sectionals are a pretty big deal,” said Holdeman. “I’m really excited to bowl but I do get nervous beforehand. The only bad thing is, is that the season ends around then too, which isn’t exciting.” Meyer only had one thing to add. “RTA baby, RTA.” This is Coach Olds’ first year coaching the bowling team, as well as this being his first year working at Kings. He says the senior class has a very special place in his heart, and he will always remember them. “You have taught me just as much as I have taught you," he said. "So I just want to say thank you and that I know all of you will go on to become successful in your future endeavors." Olds cited Bo Schembechler's popular phrase: "Those who stay will be champions," and said this reminds him of his team. “I feel that the boys have done exceptionally well as a team, but more so as leaders in and outside of the classroom as they have been a model of consistency and respect for Kings Athletics.”
