KHS Visual Art Students recently earned recognition at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Beginning in THE 1920’S, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have given recognition to several creatively talented teens in the U.S. They have also provided the largest number of scholarships for young artists and writers, including famous past winners; Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates. Kings students who received Gold Keys, the highest level of achievement on the regional level, were: Danni Miller for Comic Art, Daniel Walton for Digital Art, Bailey Vermette for Drawing, Lauren Lalli for Painting, Kyle Cantrell for Photography, Emily Douglass for Photography, Veronica Meza for Photography, Zoe Rodriguez for Photography, and Daniel Walton for Photography. Kings students who received Silver Keys included: Kevin Butler for Digital Art, Joey Meenach for Digital Art, Courtney Herald for Film & Animation, and Danielle Albers for Photography. Kings students who received Honorable Mentions were: Taylor Reece for Architecture, Betsy Toadvine for Design, Kyle Cantrell for Digital Art, Matt Liebowitz for Digital Art, Kelly Madison for Digital Art, Abbey Gillott for Mixed Media, Lauren Lalli for Painting, Elena Leo for Painting, Jerod Allen for Photography, Emily Douglass for Photography, Kelly Madison for Photography, and Paul Rooney for Photography. “Digital art takes a lot of work and creativity, so it always turns out really cool,” said Kevin Butler, whose work is ahown above, earned a Silver Key. “My teacher Mrs. Shields has taught me so much, and I give a lot of credit to her for my work. I think it’s really awesome that I got recognized for my art.” An awards ceremony will be held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center on Feb. 10. Seventh and eighth grades will take place at 6 p.m., ninth and tenth grades at 7 p.m., with juniors and seniors at 8 p.m. Shileds said the student artwork will be on exhibition from Feb. 3 -17. Opening Night is Friday, February 3, 2012 at 5 to 9 pm, and it will be open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm, and Monday through Friday from 9 to noon, and 4 to 8 pm. The exhibition is in the RiverCenter Office Building, 100 RiverCenter Blvd, Covington, KY 41011. The artwork will be out for show until 10 p.m. following the ceremony.
