It may feel like March in Kings Mills, but it's January somewhere. And the warm, wet weather hasn't stopped Kings ski and snowboard enthusiasts from getting out into the white stuff. The area has seen enough cold weather for Perfect North Slopes in Indiana to manufacture snow. That means the Kings Ski and Board Club is in full swing. Every Wednesday for the next four weeks, two full buses of Kings students will pack up their ski equipment and warm clothes and make the hour long trip to Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg. On Jan. 4, after returning from winter break, the Kings Ski and Board Club took its first trip to Perfect North for the season. In charge of the club this year are Kings parents Nancy Firsich and Kim Danko. They carry on a tradition that started several years ago. “Tim Healey first started Ski Club years ago because it was something his family really enjoyed and he wanted the kids at school to get the opportunity to enjoy it also. After him Cathleen Fagan took over, and now I’m in charge,” Firsich said. Ski Club is for Kings kids of almost any age or school - from Columbia to the high school. If the snow report looks good, most high school kids drive themselves to Perfect North, in order to be able to leave early or stay as long as they want. “My favorite part about skiing is seeing all of the snow and watching all of my friends wipe out,” said Senior Jeremy Copeland, who skis while at Perfect North. “I currently look like I’ve been beat up and have bruises all over my face from when I crashed last week.” Senior Robbie Guiliano, pictured above right, also skis. He said his favorite part of ski club is “hitting the terrain park with my buddies and trying new tricks.” Copeland and Guiliano both attended the first trip, and are pictured above on the ski lift Monday evening. Perfect North offers many different trails, ranging from beginner to expert. Kings Ski Club members pay a bus fee, but get a group discount at Perfect North.
